Ontario Invests One and a Half Million Dollars to Strengthen and Protect Home Builders

The Ontario government has announced a $1.5 million investment through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream to help 100 experienced construction workers become mentors. These mentors will train others in modern home construction technologies and innovative building practices. This initiative is part of Ontario’s $2.5 billion investment in the SDF program, designed to strengthen the province’s workforce, enhance safety, and support the government’s goal of building more homes while ensuring workers are equipped with the skills needed for the future.

Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini emphasized that Ontario’s economy demands a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the province’s growing infrastructure needs. With over $200 billion in planned infrastructure projects, this investment ensures that home builders have the right training to fill in-demand jobs and sustain Ontario’s long-term growth. The goal is to empower more workers to contribute effectively to the housing sector while keeping the dream of home ownership alive for families across the province.

The announcement took place at Panel-It, a St. Thomas division of Doug Tarry Homes. The program, called Futures Faster, is led by the Ontario Home Builders Association (OHBA). It will start by training mentors in leadership, building code changes, and emerging technologies. Once prepared, these mentors will guide new workers — including recent graduates and those facing job displacement — to earn up to two professional credentials in areas such as resilient construction, mass timber building regulations, and radon mitigation practices, opening doors to specialized career growth.

Parliamentary Assistant Mohamed Firin highlighted that mentorship is key to developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople. By transforming seasoned professionals into mentors, Ontario is strengthening its workforce and providing new pathways for career advancement. Since 2021, the province has invested $1.5 billion through the SDF, helping over one million workers pursue in-demand careers. The government’s 2025 Budget adds another $1 billion over three years, bringing the total to $2.5 billion, reaffirming Ontario’s commitment to training, innovation, and workforce resilience.
